BATAC, Philippines — More than two decades after former President Ferdinand E. Marcos died in disgrace in Hawaii, the Philippine government says it is formally considering his family’s longstanding demand for a burial with honors in a cemetery reserved for presidents and other prominent figures.

His widow, Imelda, has refused to bury him elsewhere, and his body is now preserved in a back-lit transparent box in a hushed mausoleum open to the public here in his hometown in the northern Philippines.

Endless Litigation: SC Says Cityhood Laws Constitutional

MANILA, Philippines - For the third time, the Supreme Court (SC) has reversed itself on the constitutionality of laws passed by the 11th Congress that paved the way for the conversion into cities of 16 municipalities.

The Court reverted back to its second ruling issued in December 2009, which declared the cityhood laws constitutional and reversed a supposed final ruling in November 2008.

Batac Comelec Unfazed by Low Turnout of SK Candidates

Batac City — With the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections barely two weeks away, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in this city is having difficulty with respect to the number of candidates for the SK election.

Batac Comelec records show that only one candidate has filed a certificate of candidacy for the SK kagawad post as of October 10, 2007.

Batac Declares June 23 as Cityhood Day

BATAC CITY — The Sangguniang Panlungsod of this city declared June 23 as the anniversary date of their cityhood as they prepare to establish a commission that would undertake organization of various activities in the celebration with corresponding appropriation of funds.

The measure, City Ordinance No. 2007-15, was jointly sponsored by Councilors Bismark Quidang, Bernardo Marders, Mary Colleen Columbia Cajigal and Vice Mayor Allan Nalupta.

The Ilocos Times learned that this has been a clamor of most local residents to commemorate the conversion of the erstwhile municipality into a component city.

Batac Council OKs Request for Mobile X-ray Unit from PCSO

Batac City — Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod of this city unanimously approved a resolution requesting the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), through its general manager, a mobile x-ray unit for the city.

Batac Councilor Bismark Quidang, a member of the council’s health committee, said this medical equipment request purposely aims to help patients who could not afford to undergo x-ray as per advise of a physician.

Quidang expressed hopes that the PCSO would grant their request as this would really help the needy people.
